Q For this project, you will research a Music Icon (soloist or group) whom you admire and who has had a positive impact on society. You will present your research in a presentation (details below). Please note that you will not be writing a formal essay for this project! This project includes the following components: 1. Choose an icon (assignment due in Week 8) 2. Research Your Icon 3. Complete an Analysis of 2 Songs 4. Create a Presentation that synthesizes your research, song analyses, photos, and videos Choosing the Icon You will choose an iconic musician or musical group you admire. Your chosen icon can come from any place, and should have been alive within the last 75 years. Make sure there is enough information on this group to research, especially if they are contemporary (your preliminary research should be done in the Week 8 "Midterm Topic & Sources" assignment). Research Your Icon As you conduct your research, you should... 1. Summarize the artist/group’s childhood experiences (musical training, performance experience, pivotal epiphanies, etc.) 2. Outline the artist's formal training, mentors or experience and how these mentors helped them develop their craft and worldview. 3. Describe any personal crises that impacted the life or career of the artist/group and/or put them on a new artistic trajectory. 4. Discuss any social or political factors that have influenced the artist/group's creative output. 5. Describe any cross-cultural, personal or musical influences and how the artist/group used/uses cultural elements in their work. 6. Describe how the Artist/Group’s work and activities make a positive impact on society or the music world. Be specific. Did the artist or his/her work create a cultural, stylistic, or technical shift? Provide details. Discuss the artist/group’s work (recordings, concerts, original compositions, collaborations, etc.) within this context. 7. Conclude by explaining why you chose this particular artist or group and share specific observations about how the artist/group's personal stories, experiences and training relate to your life, experiences, training and/or aspirations. Simply, why do you appreciate and admire this artist and their work in the world? NOTE: Within the final presentation, you must cite all your sources using parenthetical citations Links to an external site.AND in a Works Cited page, using MLA style. Complete a Song Analysis Using the "Bohemian Rhapsody" analysis sheet and our textbook as guides, analyze two of your Music Icon's definitive songs. • You should construct a substantive analysis of musical elements such as form, melodic & harmonic content, texture, orchestration, dynamics, etc. • The, analyze the text of the song for meaning and examine how the composer used both acoustic and/or electronic music or sound effects to add deeper meaning to the text of the song. • Finally, analyze any cultural or cross-cultural elements featured in the work. Do you think they were effective? Were these cultural elements authentic (reflecting the Artist/Group's own culture), mixed, borrowed or appropriated? • Incorporate these analyses into your presentation in order to make larger points about the artist's style, musical innovation, social commentary/political stances/positive impact on society. Compile your Research & Song Analysis into a Presentation In lieu of writing an essay, you will create a multi-media Powerpoint or Google Slides presentation. Here, you will synthesize your research, song analysis, photos, and videos. The presentation should include: • Minimum of 10 informational slides - slides must contain text, pictures, embedded videos, and musical examples. • A title page slide that includes your name, the date, and the title of your project • Information includes: childhood, training, family, career & work/accomplishments, crises (if applicable), cross-cultural influences (if applicable) and positive impact on society. • Important information is summarized using boxes or bullets. • Product must be thoughtfully constructed with presentation in mind. • Parenthetical citations should be used throughout the presentation. • A properly formatted MLA-style Works Cited page must be included on the last slide.
